How do I explain to you via a social media post, how incredible the fit of this very simple Plus size, Miracle Shape top is? The best I can do is post this photo, and tell you that after all these years, I still marvel at how the simplest of fabrics and designs still have the ability to blow me away.
When I first tried it on, my instant reaction was…wow look at how much shape I have, even after a ‘bit of a fall off the weight bus, winter’…eeeek!!
The fabric is definitely the reason for the wonderful fit. It is lightweight and has a slinky feel to it, but it doesn’t cling.
I’ve kept the design very simple and am letting the fabric shine this time. If you’re looking for a simple, casual, comfortable top for everyday, this is it.
For those of you who have already bought it, thank you for the feedback and I’m glad you are enjoying the simplicity and comfort.
I enjoy leading and learning, and am privileged to have nurtured a team, who are comfortable to give me constructive feedback that I continuously learn from.
Allowing my team members to express themselves and to actively participate in making decisions about fabric, designs and the final look and feel of collections, has proved to me that the Boss doesn’t always have to make all the decisions. Some of our most successful designs have come from input from the seamstresses who vary in age from 30 – 60 years old.
For so long I did this alone, now working as a team, is so much more rewarding than working solo.
Yes it is, if you have a whole lot of patience and determination…oh and it helps if the designer is Plus size herself!!
I’ve spent the last two years determined to create Plus size shapes with Shape. I’ve gone where I never thought I could go, and I’ve uncovered a tiny little area just under the bust, that I’ve worked with, that allows me to shape any size. For way too long, Plus size styles have been stuck in a rut of, however big the tummy and the behind are, that’s how big the area around the shoulders and the bust need to be. That’s the furtherest thing from design truth, it just needed somebody to take the time (a lot of it), and a whole lot of patience, to find shape. It really is there, and it makes the hugest difference to the fit of Plus size clothing.
Working with the new Hayley Joy Miracle Shape tops is like a breath of fresh air for me. Being able to tell clients that I will give them shape, no matter their size, is the most wonderful feeling, and then seeing the look on their faces when they see the shape for themselves, when standing in front of the mirror, is like winning a gold medal. I truly feel like I’ve done my own Olympics whilst designing these new shapes. All the hard work is perfectly cemented when I see the new Summer ’16 collections coming out of Hayley Joy production.
In my never ending attempts to create slimming illusions, I have come to really appreciate the power of diagonal lines. With each new design I get to see how much slimmer I can make you look, by combining complimentary fabrics, and playing with interesting and flattering angles.
This fabric posed a challenge, as it actually has distinct horizontal lines that are set widely apart, which is not flattering for Plus sizes at all. Hayley Joy production and I pushed the boundary somewhat, and cut the panels in such a way, that you don’t notice the stripes. I soooooo love that we can do that!! It’s one of the many advantages of me having my own production facility, we can play around with concepts that would never be entertained by a CMT factory, and if they did, it would be way to expensive. It doesn’t always make good business sense because it takes that much longer to hand cut, but I really loved the fabric and knew we could make a plan.
This multi fabric mesh overvest is in store now, and works perfectly paired with a plain black short sleeve Miracle undertop.
Sizes S – 6XL
Price R899 for the Overvest, R599 for the Undertop.
The Hayley Joy basic leggings are one of our true basics. They have been engineered to fit like true Plus size leggings should…into the waist, and with the correct shaping to prevent them from rolling down under the tummy, when you sit down and stand up.
I can hear you saying, “yes exactly”!
I’m often asked how I know what is required to design styles for true Plus size shapes, that genuinely fit and flatter. Well here’s the thing, I am a Plus size myself, so it makes sense that I should be a magician at designing for odd and Plus sizes. I have a design policy that I use for all new designs…I design, we sample, and I test drive them by wearing them for a couple of hours, in the factory, going about my normal job.
I have a very basic checklist for new styles, the leggings one looked like this:
1. Sit perfectly in the waist.
2. MUST NOT ROLL DOWN when sitting and standing up. (This is all in the back crutch design, which I take into account, because it cannot be the same as it is for normal sizes.)
3. Added bonus would be, if the leggings kept their shape all day and didn’t make knees. (Not always achievable, but I try my best to check the quality of the stretch before they go into production.)
4. Make sure that the non-curl elastic does its job and doesn’t twist, and that the elastic is loose enough that it doesn’t dig into the waist, especially if they’re being worn for exercise purposes.
I can absolutely vouch for the HJ leggings. I wear them for Pilates and never have to adjust them. I wear them to work in with long funky tops, and I wear them smart/casual as well.
I love the comfort factor, and it’s soooooo important for me to go through a day, in a garment that doesn’t make me feel like I want to rip it off at lunchtime.
The basic Black leggings are a great basic, but I do love the printed ones, as they provide great cover on my, not so perfect legs.
The Spring/Summer ’16 range of Miracle Wave jackets, are now available from Hayley Joy Online. http://hayleyjoy.com
I love being able to share great Plus size designs with you…these Hayley Joy Miracle Wave jackets are my new favourite HJ style. I’m all about designing for comfort and the longer I wear HJ, the more spoilt I become.
This Miracle Wave jacket style came to be, after many conversations in HJ retail, about the need for a basic styled jacket, that could work for different occasions. So many of my Corporate clients struggle to find a basic black jacket that is long enough to cover their problem areas, as well as smart enough to fit in with the Corporate look. This style seems to be acceptable in most corporate environments.
Semi-casual occasion wear is another gap in Plus size clothing. It’s really difficult to find a smart/casual jacket in all sizes. There are lots and lots of ‘one size fits all’ options available, but I’m afraid they don’t go anywhere near me, and I get really despondent trawling the shops. I put myself through this every so often, as part of my market research. I walk in the shoes of my clients, and that gives me perfect indications of what I need to be designing. The advantage of this style is that you can keep it simple, or dress it up with scarves, jewellery or a sparkly camisole.
And last but not least, it is the most wonderful travel garment. It doesn’t crease so you can fold it up, keep it in your handbag, and when needed you just slip it on and it looks perfect.
I will be introducing them, through the season, in a variety of different fabrics and they are generously sized from small to 7XL.
Signing up to a random iPhone photography course has opened me up to a whole new world, one that enables me to combine my love for natures beauty, with my love for fashion design.
I have a really beautiful garden that I used to spend very little time in, it was never a priority…and then I started taking photos of everything and anything, and now I spend every available moment, zooming in on all this incredible beauty that surrounds me.
My mom-in-law, who is a landscaper, has planted some very special roses for me. My most favourite is a rose called Peace. It reminds me of a marshmallow. The colours are so soft and the scent is beautiful.
I had a reward of two beautiful flowers at the same time, and have had the most inspiring time editing them for all different uses.
In light of the craziness that has happened in the world this last week I share with you my magnificent Peace rose.
Two years ago a seed was planted, to offer our Hayley Joy, Plus size collections, online. Today that dream is a reality and my excitement has no bounds, as I set out on this amazing path to offer real shapes to real women, wherever you are in the world. I have created true Plus size shapes, sized from a generous small to a very generous 7XL, to fit and flatter, no matter your size or your shape.
Welcome to Hayley Joy online and welcome to my Shape Evolution.

My grandmother was a wonderful seamstress and she had lots of ‘sewing stuff’ accumulated over many years. I have very fond memories of how we used to lay things out, when we were planning a new outfit. It was the highlight of my school holidays, when I went to stay with Granny Lily.
I had a real déjavu moment when I walked into Hayley Joy production, and the new Summer Overvest samples were laid out on the cutting table for me to assess. I love these moments in my design career.
Designing for Plus sizes is such a privilege for me. I am inspired and motivated, by my need to offer all sizes, fashionable styles. The HJ Miracle overvest is a style that I’m extremely proud of, it offers the fit that I envisioned, and I love the look on clients faces when they see themselves in the different variations.
I constantly strive to design styles that honour all shapes and sizes. It is so rewarding turning a disillusioned client into a grateful client. I am determined to be the designer, who proves that regular fashion can be styled into Plus sizes, after all I’m the designer who invented a Shape not a Size.
